You Know What’s Coming
It may seem like a small thing at the moment, but the uncensored SNL piece, Dick in A Box, is about to raise an enormous issues about regulation of broadcast content on the Internet. It has taken a while, but traditional broadcasting companies are finally catching on to the fact that the Internet is a powerful channel for marketing their content. In fact, some of the most forward-looking network marketers have taken advantage of the web to create communities (Lost, 24) or extend the reach of their shows (SNL, Conan). My kids watch Conan’s Pale Force on their iPods because the original broadcast is on too late.
The problem is that while network broadcasters are regulated by the FCC, the Internet is not. As the two mediums begin to overlap, it is only logical that the regulatory body for broadcast media will follow the content online. That could mean big trouble for many of the online businesses currently unhampered by restrictions on their advertising, content and distribution.
Oh, and here is the link to the uncensored Samberg/Timberlake video on YouTube. Enjoy it while you can!
