They know what you're thinking...

...and feeling amid plastic packing crates, dustbins, old account documents and office supplies (some dating back to the pre-internet age) - a very slight twinge of nostalgia. As you look at old account files, trade show tchotchkes (favorite word right now) and magazines, that lingering sentiment is easily replaced with the excitement of the new officeplace, and of course the free cereal and coffeebar.

This may very well be the final posting from the 8thfloorwindow blogspot, which was created back in early 2005. A transitional time when the New York Tech practice was a fledgling team of only a handful of young energetic account staff, eager for new challenges and looking to take on the road ahead.

But since then, the practice has steadily grown in complexity and the range of its business. And, most importantly, in fresh faces and passionate ideas.

So as we move on to the 17th floor of our new building across town, we need to consider a new virtual home for our thoughts and ideas about Tech, PR and NY. Dare I propose a relaunch? A rebrand if you will?

On to 919, and adieu to our old friend- the 8thfloor.

Talk soon.

Edie Edie Bo-Bedie...

The sixties are back! With the success of recent films such as "Bobby" and "Factory Girl" there seems to be a shift underway in style and culture here in the US of A. For a fix, and closer look, check out the baby boom generation's original "It-girl" and Warhol muse - Edie Sedgwick. There is a retrospective at The Museum of Moving Image in Queens this week (March 31 - April 8). Check out the site.

What's a Widget?

You remember Rodney Dangerfield in "Back to School" when he smartly asks his college class - "What's a widget?". Well, Rodney eventually learned, but now the widget is an entirely new tangible product.

See an example at the bottom of this blog page. They're mini interactive windows that connect users from one web page to another. See ABC's new "Lost" widget at the bottom, taken from the UGO.com site. Just click on "Take it", then copy the code into your MySpace page, blog or any web page.

Enjoy.

Wii Have A Problem

To extend growing awareness for the new Nintendo Wii system, UGO.com has featured the following website (WiiHaveAProblem.com) that documents the travails of owning the Wii. The Wii has captured a significant portion of the console pie over the past few months, and attracted thousands of former and casual gamers, children and parents alike.

Unfortunately the enthusiam for the system has created an unexpected danger - having the controller slip! See a series of posts on the destruction caused by the Wii handheld - HD TVs, coffee tables etc. Most is in good fun, and seems as though users are enjoying the system enough to ignore the inconvenience.

You Know What’s Coming

It may seem like a small thing at the moment, but the uncensored SNL piece, Dick in A Box, is about to raise an enormous issues about regulation of broadcast content on the Internet.

It has taken a while, but traditional broadcasting companies are finally catching on to the fact that the Internet is a powerful channel for marketing their content. In fact, some of the most forward-looking network marketers have taken advantage of the web to create communities (Lost, 24) or extend the reach of their shows (SNL, Conan). My kids watch Conan’s Pale Force on their iPods because the original broadcast is on too late.

The problem is that while network broadcasters are regulated by the FCC, the Internet is not. As the two mediums begin to overlap, it is only logical that the regulatory body for broadcast media will follow the content online. That could mean big trouble for many of the online businesses currently unhampered by restrictions on their advertising, content and distribution.

Oh, and here is the link to the uncensored Samberg/Timberlake video on YouTube. Enjoy it while you can!

Starter Laptops

The $100 laptop is an important idea with the potential to (slightly) level the global technology literacy playing field.

The program has a great deal of supporters, but the Wintel alliance is not among them. Perhaps that is due to the fact that the machine uses an AMD processor, LINUX applications and Google email (Gmail).

When are Intel and Microsoft going to learn to shed their proprietary approach to the world and realize that starter laptops lead to demand for more feature-rich machines?
